The Building Blocks of Art
Learning to Look at Paintings

An Introduction to the Paintings Collection at
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

What are the basic elements of art?
How does an artist use these elements
to express a creative idea?

By focusing on a wide variety of paintings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Building Blocks of Art: Learning to Look at Paintings introduces participants to the basic elements of art and the key concepts an artist considers during the creative process.

This lesson provides participants with a strategy for looking at art that can be used when visiting any museum collection, and is appropriate for an audience of adults and community members or a school group of middle-to high school students.
